Lister Power
To most people, paying almost $2,000 for a 6 hp engine that weighs in at nearly 700 ponds and only runs at 600 rpm, is not a very good deal. To me it is. The reason is that this engine runs on waste motor oil, waste restaurant cooking oil, kerosene, diesel fuel or just about anything else that will burn and you can get for free. As a matter of fact, some people pay me a dollar a gallon to take their waste motor oil. It also runs on considerably less fuel than a lot of other engines run on too. This 6 HP engines runs about 4 to 6 hrs on a gallon of waste whatever.
Actually they quit making these years ago, but some places in India started to make copies. The originals were often started and not even shut off for 20 years or more. The knock offs however pretty much need an overhaul before you even start it up. You need to clean out the casting sand from the oil sump, check the tolerances and polish the bearing surfaces etc. You can pay a thousand for one just as it comes from the factory, or you can almost double that and get one ready to start and run after being brought up to American standards.
OK, so what do you do with them? Most people produce electricity so they can go tell the power company to stick their meter ... well ... you know what I mean, and run them on the free fuel I was telling you about. Some even go as far as to produce Biodiesel from the waste cooking oil to run in them.
COOLING
Cooling for the engine is by thermo siphon, which comes from hot water raising and cold water dropping. This means you don't need a water pump for cooling. Here is how to set up the tank. By the way, if you ever wanted to connect a pipe connection to the side or bottom of a 55 gallon steel or plastic drum without welding,
This will explain it.
OIL PUMP
Oil pump, it hasn't got one, it is splash lube.
ELECTRIC START
Hasn't got that either. You can rig it up with a starter and ring gear or motor belted to the flywheel, but why? The more things you have, the more ypou have to go wrong.
I have seen people take one of these engines and add sensors and then computer control them to automaticaly start and stop when needed and to stop if it gets hot or low oil. That is all good and great, but the idea of buying one of these is to get rid of the things that go wrong with modern engines and keep it simple.
Here is my Blog about the installation and service records of my generating plant.
Here are some zip files containing the scans of an origional lister 6-1 owners manuel.
They are about 4+ MB each except for number 5 which is smaller.
Here is a 6MB full copy. Not quite as large but less download time
Here is about 3 MB copy, smaller but still readabele
